Sunday Special – 2 Cellos

Today’s feature is not a place but a musical duo that are beyond talented. I saw them in concert here in Vancouver this past Friday and I have to write about them. I first heard of 2 Cellos when a friend posted one of their videos from YouTube onto Facebook. When I watched the video I was amazed, simply amazed. Upon opening the video link I did not expect to hear their rendition of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana played incredibly on cellos. I watched the video again. Then I looked up some other videos. And frankly I was hooked. A new spin on popular songs. I love it!

Classically trained cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser make up this genius musical duo. They both studied in Croatia and for a time were rivals at music competitions. Now they tour and produce albums to modern songs. They also have drummer who helps out with some of the tunes. When I attended their sold out show at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre they had the crowd enthralled. With the audience cheering, applauding and a grand standing ovation these two good looking musicians brought down the house. Their enthusiasm in their playing is evident – they are rock stars.

Some of the songs they played included:

Unfortunately my video quality is poor so I do not have any videos to share. I only took one photo as I realized quickly that my camera phone was not going to do justice from where I was sitting. Though I do encourage you to click the links above for their YouTube videos. I would be surprised if you are not impressed.

Music and Video

Travel without music is well, like not getting dessert. It just adds to the experience. Whether you have your own playlist or a song plays randomly at that right moment, music cements those incredible moments and people into our hearts and minds for lifetime. No matter where I am I am transported back in time to a magical travel place just by hearing a song. REM’s “Shiny Happy People” places a smile on my face and whisks me back to Heidelberg, Germany. “Hey Baby” by DJ Otzi has me back in Mallorca with my bestie. More recently, Kanye’s “BLKKK SKKKN HEAD” has me roadtrippin’ to Tofino. The power of music is indefinable.

How many times have you concocted a playlist for that weekend road trip? Have a travel playlist on your iPod or MP3 player? Or listen to music that leads you to envision yourself on your next trip? That is what I have been doing lately. A few songs come to mind. I have selected some and I have posted below. One because of the lyrics and another because of the video. Finally, a non-music video that a friend uploaded to Facebook and I love it!  Here you go:

CUPS (WHEN I’M GONE) by Anna Kendricks:

I COULD BE THE ONE by Avicii vs Nicky Romero (has images some may find offensive)
I like the video and think it is hilarious, except the ending.

WE ARE BACKPAKCERS (non-music video)

This is the non-music video that I saw on my friend’s FB page and I so get it! This RTW trip scares the crap out of me but what is that saying…”If your dreams don’t scare you then they are not big enough.”

HAPPY TRAVELING!!

Summer Fun in Vancouver

I originally complied this list and posted it on Couchsurfing at the beginning of the spring (and received some info from other members too). Seeing as there is a plethora of fun events around town I decided to share it here as well. Summer in Vancouver is fantastic. Generally the weather is agreeable, outdoor activities abound and patios beg for attention. If you are planning a trip to Vancouver this summer, I hope this list finds you. If you live here, I hope to see you out and about at one or many of these activities.

Sunday’s Special Spot – Helsinki

This week’s picture takes us to a special monument in Helsinki, Finland. For those of you who don’t know, I am of Finnish ethnicity. I’m a first generation Canadian – yes, I am the daughter of immigrants. I am proud of my background almost as much as I am proud to be a Canadian. So here we go, a great photo of the Sibelius Monument in Helsinki:

Sibelius Monument, Helsinki, Finland (designed by Eila Hiltunen)

Born in 1865, Jean Sibelius was a talented and celebrated composer and musician and one of Finland’s greatest talents. He is credited with affecting the National Identity of Finland and having a strong influence on symphony and sound. He lived to a ripe old age of 91.
